Prostate Health Precautions

Some people believe that screening is a practical technique that doctors use to monitor, or test for prostate cancer. Contrary to their notions, doctors often refer other methods to test a man’s prostate glands. Screening to some doctors put the man at greater risks, while other doctors tend to think it can help prevent the cancer. The many debates however, has left screening open and diagnosis measures going in other ways.

During regular visits to the doctor, men are asked about their family history of cancer. Most doctors are taking great measures to help men prevent cancer, especially if the men are black or have a history of cancer. Doctors’ are trying harder to identify the condition at the earliest stage and are continue to look for cures. The point of this screening is to ensure that the doctor’s chance of getting to the disease and curing it is at the earliest phase.

When a man is tested for prostate cancer, the doctor uses the DRE or PSA test methods. DRE is the digital rectum exam whereas the doctor wears latex gloves, lubricates one of the fingers, and inserts it up the male’s anus. The doctor will feel around for lumps or gland enlargement. Prostate-specific antigen or PSA tests help to measure the level of protein, known as PSA in the bloodstream. If cancer cells are overproducing the protein will cause the elevation of PSA blood level, which many men with should have a 4.0 level of nanograms per milliliter. That is ng/ml. If this count is higher then it signifies that cancer may be present. However, the doctor will conduct other tests to weed out possibilities, since certain medications or drugs can increase the PSA level.

If cancer is present, the doctor may perform biopsies. The procedure requires that the doctor insert a needle into the walls of the rectum and then extract samples from the tissue and prostate. The tissues are scrutinized under a telescopic microscope.

Men 50 years and older are recommended by the American Cancer Society to get DRE and PSA tests annually, as well African, and black males should also get tests annually to help prevent cancer. By being tested annually, you can help your doctor and you prepare, prevent, and take measures to fight existing cancer.
