Reasons For High Cholesterol

High cholesterol, often coined with heart disease, 1 of the top killers in our modern society today. With a huge variety of fast food chains scattered across the globe, efforts to lead a healthy lifestyle through a proper diet are becoming harder. Even with this said, other than an unhealthy diet, there are still other causes of high cholesterol that many people may not know about. Scientific research have helped us to identify certain causes of high cholesterol, and hopefully after going through them, you would have sufficient information to understand what causes high cholesterol and take actions to prevent it from occurring in your life.

Our Weight: Extra pounds on your body can be potentially dangerous as it can increase the cholesterol level of your body tremendously. Bringing back the example of America, it is without a doubt that Americans are facing huge problems, literally; as a result of an unhealthy diet of fast food and lack of a lifestyle of exercise. Foods that contain high amounts of saturated fat are often the main culprit, yet the one getting punished is us, as we fall sick with diseases such as heart problems and high cholesterol. Saturated fat can often be found in food such as, fast food, packaged food and prepared food. Furthermore, besides food high in saturated fat, foods that contain high amounts of carbohydrates can also lead to high cholesterol. It is true that carbohydrates give us the energy we need daily, but when the energy is left unused, it is converted into fat.

Genetic Heritage: Being born into a family with a history of cholesterol problems can also be a cause for high cholesterol. In such cases, generation after generation would pass down the genetic dysfunctions which include the inability to eliminate cholesterol from the body or their bodies produce excessive quantities of cholesterol. As a result, it would be especially difficult to keep their cholesterol levels in check; even with the best kind of medication, it still may have a chance of failure to keep the cholesterol levels of these people at a normal level. Despite this, with a right diet, proper exercise lifestyle and medical treatments, it can reduce the chances of having serious complications.

Gender / Age: As we age, it is inevitable that our cholesterol levels would increase. Despite cases where children as young as 10 years old have been diagnosed with heart disease due to high cholesterol, research has shown that as we age, our cholesterol levels would also rise. Researchers have also found out that men are generally more likely to have higher levels of cholesterol, this occurs due to the male body producing larger amounts of cholesterol than the female body. However, it has also been found out that women tend to be more prone to heart disease after menopause.

Stress: In itself, stress does not directly bring about higher levels of cholesterol, yet immense amounts of stress can cause one to have behavioral changes and lifestyle changes. It may result in eating disorders or even causing one to lead an unhealthy lifestyle of not exercising. Such change in lifestyle would inevitably lead to a life plagued by high cholesterol.

As you can see from the points mentioned above, obesity or eating junk food excessively are not the only causes of high cholesterol. Even a healthy person can fall victim to heart disease due to high cholesterol due to genetic heritage. Yet, watching out diet, having regular exercise and leading a carefree life with less stress can actually still help us in keeping our cholesterol levels in check.

Prostate Cancer Surgery

During surgery, doctors will remove the prostatectomy at some phases it can cure cancer, but if the cancer is spread out, there is no cure. The surgical procedure however can prolong life. During the surgery, the doctor may explore the lymph nodes to decide how extensive the cancer has spread. Resection is another type of procedure, which is commonly known as TURB. During the surgery, the doctor will remove all areas of the prostate gland. The purpose is to eliminate the cancer and reduce any obstructions.

In some surgical procedures, the testes are removed. Typically, this is orchiectomy, which reduces the level of testosterone to slow cancer spread. Men often endure flash backs and other symptoms after surgery.

According to medical doctors, removing the prostatectomy is useful when the cancer is confined to the prostate gland only. If the cancer is rapidly spreading this form of surgery is not useful. Usually the doctor will give the man a general anesthesia, and he is hospitalized overnight. The doctor will set up a treatment plan to accompany the procedure. The surgery could lead to serious side effects, such as permanent erectile dysfunction. It can also cause urine incontinence, and other complications.

Prostatectomy has three forms that include, radical, nerve-sparing radical, and laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. Laparoscopic is an internal examination of the stomach. During radical procedures the complete seminal vesicles, prostate gland, and parts of the vas deferens are removed. Doctors will often choose this plan, simply because the chances of cure are higher than that in other surgical measures. Men that have had radical surgery have lived up to 10 years longer.

Nerve-sparing prostatectomy is the process whereas the doctor can save some of the nerves for erectile. If cancer has invaded the nerve or blood cells however, doctors will not use this surgery. Radical surgery increases the chance of producing erectile dysfunction, while this surgical procedure does not.

Laparoscopic surgery has some advantages. With this, procedure doctors cut smaller incisions during surgery. Postoperative pain after surgery is limited. This surgery is limited, since it has a technical demand.

Often when doctors consider surgery, they will consider other treatments as well. Some of the common treatments are radiation therapy. The purpose of this treatment is to attempt the process of eliminating the cancerous cells so that they do not spread further into the male’s body.

Radiation therapy often causes loss of hair, and other complications immediately after however. Some people believe that this therapy has caused more harm than good. In fact, most people agree that chemotherapy and radiation has been responsible for causing death sooner. There is no real evidence to support such claims, but there are suggestions that this could be true. It is wise to discuss treatments and surgery with your doctor, rather than with people on the streets. It is also wise to discuss such topics on prostate cancer surgery with men that have undergone the procedures.

Nutural Cures

There’s been a tremendous amount of interest in natural remedies for the ills that ail us over the years.  People are flocking to naturopaths and eschewing the established medical communities, who for years have been held as THE only expert in the healing arts. There’s an excellent reason for this turning away from the established medical community and returning to the healing ways that people have used for hundreds of years to better their health.  Some, of course, are playing follow the leader/trend and want to be involved in the current ‘in’ thing, others are doing it because they truly believe in nature’s power to cure.

You can see this in the number of natural healing stores that are cropping up across the nation. Where once a mother would take her child in to the doctor for an ear infection and be given antibiotics, she now goes to her local naturopathic store for some herbal ear drops instead.  People are using natural cures and remedies, medicines that are made at home from natural ingredients because it’s very simple, there is generally no danger of side effects, it’s inexpensive and no chemicals are used.

Natural is better and it’s also a booming consumer industry.

Home based remedies are ones that basically use the chemicals naturally present in herbs, or spices or any other food source that will fight the foreign element in the body that’s causing pain or infection.  Instead of using harsh chemicals in antibiotics or pain medications that are meant to kill infections and/or alleviate pain, many people are turning towards nature for its softer, gentler cures.  You only have to listen to the drug company commercials on TV to know why.  Once the benefits of a certain drug are talked about, you’re then given a list of the possible complications and side effects you’ll have if you take this particular drug.  For most people, those side effects are worse than the cure.

Natural cures are wonderful in that you know you’re not putting anything artificial into your body and for a many people, that’s reason enough to use homeopathic health remedies.

Positive Thinking

Together with a positive attitude, positive thinking can create success. Positive thinking is a skill. The habits and methods of positive thinking are easy to describe. The hard part  is to apply the persistence and repetition necessary to build them into a powerful thought process.

Positive thinking has a clear target or goal in mind. Unlike a vague, general “positive attitude”, positive thinking focuses on the end result. The choice of a goal or target for your result is essential. The goal needs to be big, exciting and a challenge. The more you are excited and challenged by your goal, the more power you create to achieve it. Small goals  do not create the necessary emotional drive that a big goal calls for. Emotions like excitement and desire will drive you to your goal.

Positive thinking is also flexible. As you approach your goal, you may see an even better way to reach it. Having a flexible attitude means you can alter ideas and get to your goal even quicker by modifying  your vision. Just as a ship upon the sea makes regular course corrections during its voyage, you will need to change and redirect yourself along the way to achieve the  end result. Never give up your major purpose, but always correct your means of getting there as you approach the end.

Causes Of Hangovers

Before every hangover comes a night of drinking.  However, the reasons behind a hangover are more than just having too much to drink – there are plenty of factors that all add up to the pain you feel the next day.  Here is a look at some of the common causes of hangovers, and what you can do to cure them.

Dehydration is a major concern with alcohol consumption.  Alcohol increases urination, flushing needed fluids from the body, along with essential vitamins and nutrients.

Alcohol is also technically a poison.  Besides the ethanol in your drink (the alcohol that gives you the tipsy feeling and makes you drunk) there are also other chemicals such as methanol and acetone.

Different alcohols will have different effects on your body.  Brandy is the worst for causing hangovers, while vodka is the least likely to cause a problem (when you drink in moderation).  Red wine and rum are also at the top of offending list.

Of course, any time you drink, you can best avoid a hangover by drinking in moderation.  Too much alcohol of any type can leave you with a hangover in the morning.

Wine is especially known to give hangovers, and there are so many factors that can affect it.  A bad harvest can cause more congeners to be in the wine, increasing the risk of a headache.  Wine that has not been given time to age properly will also be more likely to give you a hangover.  How quickly wine can be drunk depends on how long the vintage was kept in oak barrels.  Six months or less, and the wine can be drunk within a year.  Stored for a year or longer, and the wine should be left alone for ate least four years.  If oak chips were added

Migraine Medication

Here it comes again, that odd sensation in your eyes. You’re feeling a bit off—and your vision is a bit iffy. It feels like you’re looking through a pane of wavy glass, and that’s making you feel a bit sick to your stomach and even a bit dizzy. It’s an aura and that means you’re going to have a migraine soon. Your aura is like an early warning system, letting you know the storm is on the way.

How do you take care of a migraine that is debilitating visually as well as physically? Some people simply take to their beds, pillows over their heads to block out the light and don’t move all day. This helps, but not much. Your migraine has still taken an entire day—and sometimes more—from you and from your family. There are better treatments available to you.

For a migraine treatment to be effective, a patient must identify likely triggers, avoid those triggers and be proactive in using treatments like relaxation or medications prescribed by their physician.

There are over the counter drugs that treat migraine pain, inflammatory agents such as ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin. These are helpful, but there is a newer class of migraine agents called triptans. Normally migraine medications simply help to mask the pain and help individuals get through it, but triptans help to manage the source of the pain by reducing the swelling of blood vessels in the brain. This reduces the inflammation and thus the pain.

The downside of triptans is that a patient suffering an ocular migraine cannot use them due to the constricting affect they have on blood vessels. This may cause problems in the retinal vessels which could result in the tragic loss of vision.

For now the best way to treat ocular migraines is to find what triggers the migraine in the first place, whether it’s a food, stress or some other trigger and avoid it. Reduce the stress in your life; maintain a schedule and get enough sleep for your needs and this should help to lessen the number of migraines an individual suffers.

Your doctor will have other ideas for you, but remember that you are your own best advocate. Keep a journal of your migraines—what you were doing and what you ate before it hit. Once you know the triggers you can take the steps avoid them.

Risks Of Lasik Surgery

Whenever a patient undergoes any type of surgical procedure there is a risk of complications. It is natural that when a person’s body is opened up and tools are in use that bacteria of some can enter the patient or the body could have a reaction related to the medication. Lasik surgery is no different, there are risks of Lasik surgery, but they are few and far between.

Lasik laser eye surgery risk continues to drop as doctors and engineers perfect the equipment used in the process. The risks involved in Lasik are reduced as doctors continue to screen for the right patients to have the surgery. Research now indicates that with the right pre-testing and surgical care the risk of any complications in LASIK surgery areunder 1%.

The most common risks of Lasik surgery is a complication with the flap created by the surgeon to cover the cornea. In traditional Lasik surgery the flap is created when tissue is cut by a surgical tool known as a microkeratome. Since this tool, a metal blade is used by a human being there remains a risk related of human error.

There is less risk with the use of blade less surgery as this does away with the human error affecting the result.

Make sure you find a well qualified and recommended surgeon to carry out the procedure.

The costs for lasik eye surgery can be high, so do some research on the various doctors who can do this treatment.

Weight Loss Tips

This time of the year, many people have decided to start a weight loss program. This can be through a variety of ways including starting a diet and change of eating habits together with an exercise program.

Maybe they have decided to join a gym and either work individually or in a group in their efforts to lose weight. Often it is easier working together with others as there can be a competitive spirit to see who can lose the most weight in say a month.

One good method is to start by weighing yourself and then keep a daily journal of what you have eaten and what exercise you have done if any.

Remember to start off the exercises slowly and then build up slowly as you get used to the exercises. There are many weight loss tips available but really a reduction in calories together with some form of exercise should result in a steady weight loss if the regime is kept going.

Experiment with different food, do some research on the calories the foods you are eating contain.
